Youth Concerto Competition

Overview and Eligibility:

Capital Philharmonic of New Jersey (CPNJ) is pleased to announce the first annual Youth Concerto Competition for the 2022-2023 season.  The first place winner of the competition will receive a $500 cash prize and will perform in person with CPNJ at the Trenton War Memorial on March 18, 2023 at 7:30 p.m.  The runner-up will be awarded $250 and must be prepared to perform in the event that the first place winner should have to withdraw.

The competition is open to all advanced pianists and instrumentalists aged 10 to 18 years as of March 18, 2023 who reside within a 75-mile radius of Trenton, NJ. There is no prescreening nor pre-audition requirement.  All applicants are required to audition in person on January 21, 2023.  In order to be confirmed as the first and second place winners, the chosen candidates must agree to commit to all relevant CPNJ rehearsal and performance dates.

All applicants should fill out and submit the online application form by Saturday, December 31, 2022 and submit the $25.00 registration fee. It is recommended that applicants submit their application with the assistance of their music instructor.

Repertoire

Applicants should prepare a selection of up to 15 minutes consisting of one or more movements of a concerto for their instrument and small orchestra.* Complete works are preferred, but not required. 


*Concerto accompaniments may be scored for strings alone, strings with limited winds, or may be a strings-only arrangement of a larger orchestration. If you need help in researching the makeup or availability of orchestral parts please contact Jill Aguayo, Executive Director, at executive@capitalphilharmonic.org.

Orchestral parts must be in the public domain and/or available at reasonable cost.

Audition

Auditions are open for all applicants and will take place in-person only. Applicants will be assigned their audition time by Friday, January 6.
