Experience Live Music

Nothing is more exciting than experiencing live performance.

Truly, recordings are miraculous. But when compared with live performance, they are the unchanging staged photos of a lovely meal, absent the savoring of each course in the company of friends.

Live music electrifies our senses. The buzz of anticipation in the audience is mirrored by that of the musicians themselves, whose fingers dance over fretboards and keys, working the hardest passages one final time.

A calm falls over the orchestra when the concertmaster appears. When the orchestra tunes the tantalizing cacophony reminds us that we have awakened a Great Beast. What will its mood be?

A sparkling tension fills the air. Soon it’s interrupted by the roar of applause for the conductor who eagerly mounts the podium. After a smile, a bow, and a pivot, time stops. There follows a stillness like no other.

What will happen?

Literally no one knows. Because it’s live, this is the one and only time any of us will experience this singular thrill.

Suddenly they’re off! An explosion of glorious noise fills the hall and vibrates within us. The boom of the bass drum, the splash of cymbals, the silver wiry pitches of the piccolo, the stunning power of the brass! And, oh, the soaring sounds of the strings and woodwinds. As our pulse quickens the distractions of the world recede, then disappear. We give ourselves to music.

No one here removes the chiffing of the bows. No one tweaks the dials to obtain a hypothetical perfect balance. No one adjusts the frequency response to parody that of a space that isn’t our concert hall. No one silences the whoosh of a big breath before the finale or the stamp of a foot on the podium. THIS is what music actually sounds like!

And please don’t forget to look.

The entire violin section sways and bows in a graceful unison that is mimicked across the stage by the cellos and basses. The conductor points to the back of the ensemble, a sorcerer’s gesture that elicits the magical sound of the bassoon, which peppers the air with a burst of pitches. Suddenly, the light catches the movement of a gigantic bell. Another flick of the wrist and the tuba plays. No one can believe that such low sound can be so beautiful and clear.

What’s this? The percussionists leap to their feet and hop between a dozen instruments, flashing sticks and mallets in a frenzy of activity that stiffens the backs of the entire ensemble. Together everyone stampedes like bison over the plain, rocking the room with their thunderous rhythm.

Look now at the audience. The patting of hands, twinkling eyes, and tapping of feet give way to smiles, claps, and cheers. Then, people leap to their feet to show their appreciation. Louder claps. More cheers.

The conductor and orchestra reciprocate, thanking the audience for their kind attention. The faces of the musicians beam, cheeks flushed with the excitement of the miracle they just performed.

Don’t you want to be a part of this?

The orchestra — your friends and neighbors — have worked hard to bring you the best of what humanity can achieve. Let’s celebrate their gift together!

Be yourself.

At our performances there’s room for everyone. Dress up or come as you are. Bring your family and friends. And especially the children. Let’s show them what AI can never replace!

Treat yourself.
