Featured in Downtown Connect: "The Sound of Trenton's Future"
We're proud to share a new feature from Downtown Connect that takes a close look at where the Capital Philharmonic of New Jersey has come from, and where we're headed.
The piece traces CPNJ's roots back to 1921, when the Trenton Symphony became New Jersey's first professional orchestra, and explores how that legacy lives on at the Trenton War Memorial today.
At the heart of the story is our Executive Director, Jill Aguayo, who shares her own path from professional flutist to arts leader, and her vision for an orchestra that preserves the great masterworks while opening its doors wider than ever. As she puts it, the goal is "meeting people where they are."

The article highlights the projects that bring that vision to life this season: the world premieres of Vince di Mura's Harmony Villa and L'Hôtel Ritz de Paris on October 24, created with local choirs and students from Foundation Academy; the Young Composers Initiative, where ten high school students have spent eight months studying composition with Dr. Joel Phillips; and our partnerships with schools, arts organizations, and nonprofits across the city. It also welcomes new Music Director Kyle Ritenauer, and imagines a Trenton where a night at the orchestra is part of a larger evening downtown.
It's a thoughtful portrait of an orchestra and a city growing together, and we're grateful to Downtown Connect for telling it.
